PENTAIR'S ETHANOL RECOVERY SOLUTIONS

Whether the aim is to minimize ethanol loss or reduce ethanol (VOC) emissions, a dedicated Ethanol Recovery System (ERS) can extract up to 95 % of ethanol entrained in vented raw fermentation gas. Besides, the ERS can concentrate the captured ethanol up to 12% v/v thus making it possible to feed scrubber bottoms to distillation.

WHY PENTAIR HAFFMANS?
Our tailor-made solution is individually designed to meet your site’s specific needs. Our in-house project management and on-site engineers work in close cooperation with your team to ensure that your project runs smoothly. Last but not least: we are there for you when your system is up and running: global service hubs and dedicated technical support – we troubleshoot whenever you need us to keep your system up and running!

CHALLENGE
Traditionally, ambient water is used to scrub ethanol from (fermentation) vent gas/from fermenters. To reduce ethanol losses, this scrub water is pumped back to processes upstream such as fermenters. This scrub water recycling process leads to

  • low ethanol concentration in scrubber bottoms
  • high consumption of fresh water
  • high ethanol loss and - possible contamination of upstream processes.

SOLUTION
Haffmans’ Ethanol Recovery System (ERS) removes ethanol and water vapor entrained in the fermentation gas.

Benefits

  • EtOH concentration of up to 12% v/v (subject to gas inlet conditions) so that EtOH rich water can be fed directly to distillation, providing add revenue
  • Water recovery
    - ERS not only recovers EtOH but also large amounts of water entrained in the fermentation gas. The recovered water is utilized to scrub incoming gas

  • Reduced Water consumption
    - Many production sites need to comply and operate within (local) water consumption restrictions. Therefore, any water savings can be used for additional (mash) production leading to more fermentation, ethanol production, and thus additional revenue.
  • Fermenters can operate optimally. No risk of fermenters being contaminated by recycled wash water.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM ETHANOL RECOVERY?

  • Bioethanol producers
  • Distilleries
  • Breweries
  • Wineries (ethanol scrubbing)
  • Cider producers
